Located in the Uttranchal near Nainital and Bijnore districts, Jim Corbett National Park is one of the oldest national parks in India. It was the given the name Jim Corbett National Park in 1956 as a tribute to Jim Corbett. It was in 1973 when 'Project Tiger' was first launched from Jim Corbett National Park.
The national park is divided into two areas-the buffer area and the core area. It is the core area which constitutes the Jim Corbett National Park whereas the buffer area comprises of reserve forests. Another wildlife sanctuary-Sonandi Wildlife Sanctuary exists in the buffer area or the reserve forests of Corbett National Park.
There are lots of ways and means to get to Jim Corbett National Park. An airport in Phoolbagh and Pantnagar located at a distance of 50 kms is the nearest airport with Delhi being the nearest location of the international airport. Ramnagar the railhead is well connected with other cities of the country. After reaching Ramnagar the tourists need to avail bus services to reach the national park.
Travelling by road is another option of reaching the Corbett National Park as the roads are well connected with nearby states.
Best Time to Visit
There are some times of the year when one should avoid visiting the Corbett National Park. Touring in those months of severe cold or heat will not add joy to the trip. The best time to go on a tour of the National Park-Jim Corbett is March to June in the summers, November to February in the winters and if planning a monsoon trip then the right time is between June to October.
What to See
There is lots to see and witness in Jim Corbett National Park. There are lots of places of tourists interest which exist silently in this national park. One such place is Dhikala. Situated at the edge of the valley of Patli Dun through which the Ramganga flows, from Dhikala one can enjoy the breathtaking view of the valley.
There is even a watchtower near Dhikala from where this view catches the eye of the tourists and also present here is an old rest house which was built two hundred years ago. There are two main grasslands in Dhikala-the Phulai Chaur and the Dhikala Chaur which also happens to be the largest grassland of the park. From these chaurs when on a drive one can enjoy the sight of the chital, wild elephants, birds and raptors.
Corbett Wildlife Museum
The place which is a must visit when on a tour of Jim Corbett National Park is the Corbett Wildlife Museum. This museum consists of the life history of Jim Corbett. His belongings have made a house in this museum with some of the animals of the park.
Another place of tourist interest near Jim Corbett National Park is Bijrani which was known to be a shooting block. It was quite famous during the British rule. The area around Bijrani is drier and also has a diversity in its vegetation.
Jhirna another tourist attraction is situated inside the southern part of the national park. It is a rest house which was a farming village till 1994 and was later made a part of Project Tiger. It is being developed to turn it into a grassland habitat as there are lots of gorges and sots located nearby. One can spot the tiger or leopard, sloth beer, deer and lots of birds in this region.
Situated at a distance of 14 kms from Ramnagar towards Ranikhet is the Garjia Temple. It is a huge rock in the middle of the Kosi river. Hundreds and thousands of tourists flock this temple throughout the year and even a fair is held here on the auspicious day of Kartik Poornima.
Clothes to Carry
For ones own safety and comfort one must consider the type of clothes and shoes one carries with him when on a trip especially a wildlife trip. A lot depends on the weather the trip is being planned in. So one needs to give a though to what he plans to carry in the form of shoes and clothes to Corbett National Park.
If planning to visit the Corbett National Park in winters between November and February it is very chilly and freezing cold. Early mornings and evenings force the tourist to get into layers and layers of jackets and sweaters. But the days are quite pleasant so a sweatshirt is quite comfortable. Gloves, muffler, woolen caps would all come handy in the winters in Corbett National Park.
The summers are completely opposite in the national park. Between April and June the sun is so very hot and the heat tends to increase day after day. With the temperatures ranging between 35-47 degree centigrade it becomes difficult to decide what to wear. Sunglasses, sunscreen lotions, mosquito repellents, insect repellents and the lightest of clothes are what are going to come handy in this weather.
