Birds in Kalakkadu Sanctuary
Kalakkadu sanctuary in Tirunelveli district of Tamil Nadu, India is located in the south most western ghat ranges. Spread over an extensive area of 233 sq.km, this wildlife sanctuary is famous for large-scale availability of diverse fauna and flora in the region.
There are more than 100 species of birds found in this region. To mention a few birds, which can be spotted frequently here are egrets, herons (long-legged, long-necked wading birds), jungle fowl, spur fowl, partridge (ground-nesting seed-eaters), They nest on the ground, emerald dove (a pigeon like bird), minivets, bee caters, quails (small, terrestrial birds, mainly seed eaters, but will also take insects and other small prey), sparrows, owls, and night jars (They are medium-sized nocturnal birds with long wings, short legs and very short bills that usually nest on the ground.
