Vegetation in Indira Gandhi Sanctuary
Indira Gandhi Sanctuary is situated at an altitude of 1,400 metres in the sprawling Western Ghats, about 90 Kms from the Coimbatore. Indira Gandhi Wildlife Sanctuary is no less than an ecological Paradise and natural wonder, housing several thousand varieties of flora and fauna.
Western Ghat slopes are covered with heavy evergreen forests. Infact they contain the only rainforests of southern India. In this region the Nilgiris and the Anamalai are the hill groups with the maximum height.
Forest types in this Biodiversity rich region varies from dry deciduous to semi-evergreen, evergreen and montane wet temperate containing teak, rose wood and many other tropical species. Rainfall in the area varies from 500 mm to 5000 mm. While western slopes receive very heavy rainfall, it is lowest on the eastern slopes.
Anamalai hill forest is known for its dense growth of trees, folds of terrains with evergreen shoals. Hundreds of species of South Indian flora are distributed here.
Some of the many rare and endangered species of flora available here include, Combretum Ovalifolium, Gymnopteris Contaimirans, Polypodum pleroupus, Bulbophyllum sp, Angiopterris Erectra,Lycopodium cernum, Ranunculus reniformis, and many others.
