Wildlife in Mundanthurai Sanctuary
Home to a diverse variety of flora and fauna Mundanthurai Sanctuary is situated in the Tirunelveli district, Tamil Nadu; India. It was in 1977 that an area of 567 sq. km was declared as a wildlife sanctuary, especially to protect the endangered lion-tailed macaque. In 1996 Mundanthurai and the neighboring Kalakkadu sanctuary were brought under Project Tiger.
Mundanthurai Sanctuary is quite rich in its animal wealth. A large number of animals, including mammals, reptiles, amphibians, and rare varieties of birds are present here. Tiger, Mouse deer, Leopard, Rusty spotted cat, Brown palm civet, Leopard, Sambhar, Spotted deer, Malabar giant squirrel, Nilgiri Langur, Bonnet Macaque, Slender Loris, Lion tailed Macaque,Sloth Bear, Brown mongoose, Nilgiri Martin, Indian pangolin, King Cobra, Python, Monitor Lizard, Flying Lizard, Pit viper, can be easily spotted in this geographically diverse region.
Birds that can be sighted here includes Ceylon mouth frog, Grey headed bulbul, Great Pied hornbill, Great Indian Hornbill, Malabar Grey hornbill, Oriental bay owl, Broad tailed Grass warbler and several others.
While enjoying the trip you can enhance your wildlife adventure through trekking, which is allowed here, but prior permission from the forest administration is mandatory.
