Wildlife in Point Calimere
Point Calimere is the apex of the Cauvery River delta, in Nagapattinam district, in the state of Tamil Nadu, India. The Point Calimere Wildlife Sanctuary was created in 1967, with an area of 24.17 km˛. In 1988, the sanctuary was enlarged, as the Great Vedaranyam Swamp (GVS) and the Talaignayar Reserve Forest were included in it, and it was renamed as Point Calimere Wildlife and Bird Sanctuary, with a total area of 377 km˛.
Point Calimere is bestowed with populations of varied wild lives. These include various interesting species of mammals like blackbuck, Wild boar, Bonnet macaque, spotted deer, and jackal. A large number of flying fox (fruit eating bats) can be spotted on trees in the Point Calimere forest and the mangrove forest.
Point Calimere is home to some of the major Waterbird species like the greater flamingo and the lesser flamingo, spot - billed pelican, spoonbilled sandpiper, Asian dowitcher, whitebellied seaeagle, brahminy kite and osprey. Landbirds include paradise flycatcher, Indian pitta, Rosy starling, Blyth reed warbler, crested serpent eagle and brown shrike.
The ecologically rich mangroves are the breeding ground for many species of marine creatures.
